Demystifying The Biosafety Secondary Laboratory

Jun 03, 2020

The outbreak of the new coronary pneumonia epidemic has gradually brought the term "biosecurity" into public view.

"As the closest place to highly pathogenic pathogenic microorganisms, workers need to wear airtight protective clothing in the decontamination room, pass through the buffer corridor, preparation area, and buffer room before entering the core area for testing. We can see that in the biosafety secondary laboratory, on-site operators demonstrated the process of wearing protective clothing. I saw that they were skilled in wearing disposable medical work caps, latex gloves, medical protective masks and experimental shoes, squeezing the cuffs and wearing masks to check the airtightness; then, open the white protective clothing and lock the extension to the neck The zipper wraps the body tightly, and the only exposed eyes on the whole body are covered with protective goggles. Finally, work with a layer of gloves and boot covers.

The negative pressure design is adopted in the laboratory to prevent the escape of pathogenic microorganisms. Before entering the laboratory, the staff must first turn on the air conditioning and high-efficiency filtering devices in the control room for half an hour to keep the laboratory pressure stable.

In the core area, the staff must be "foolproof" for the samples they operate. All operations must be performed in the biological safety cabinet. The two cooperate with each other. After the experiment, the protective clothing should be removed according to the process of wearing and removing protective clothing. The relevant areas were disinfected. After a test, the hair was often soaked in sweat.
